Daystar University is organizing its Annual Scientific Conference, hosted by the School of Communication. The theme of the conference ‘Climate Change for Planetary Health’ is timely and sets the pace ahead of the November COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Climate change in the context of planetary health highlights the interdependence of human and Earth health. 

This conference aims to strengthen multidisciplinary research in advancing planetary health as a key component of climate action, driving meaningful discussions across various research dimensions. It will draw participants from diverse disciplines, including but not limited to communication, sciences, education, economics, law, psychology, agriculture, health, business and religion.

Proffesor Of Entrepreneurship

Prof. Bitange Ndemo is Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium and the EU, a respected ICT thought leader, and Professor of Entrepreneurship at UON. He’s an advocate for tech-driven development and social enterprise in Africa, with over 30 years’ expertise in policy, academia, and government. Formerly Permanent Secretary in ICT, he serves on elite boards and advises UN agencies. Widely published and a leading public intellectual, he shapes innovation and governance across sectors through research, teaching, and media commentary.

Dr. David Chiawo

Dean School of Tourism and Hospitality -  Strathmore University

Dr. David Chiawo is an ecologist focused on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable resource management. He leads integrated, multi-stakeholder projects combining science, community needs, and policy. Using tools like spatial modeling and ecosystem service quantification, he advances public and policy understanding of climate impacts. Founder of CCLEP at Strathmore University, he empowers African leaders for climate action, promoting ecosystem resilience through innovative approaches to land-use change, conservation, and science-policy integration.

Prof. Nduka Otiono

Director, Institute of African Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada

A Nigerian Canadian Professor, writer, poet, and a journalist.  His multi-disciplinary research addresses how street stories of popular urban narratives in postcolonial Africa travel through many cultural formations, such as oral tradition, the press, movies, popular songs, and social networks.

Dr James Kaoga 

Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation – University of Nai​robi

Dr. James Otieno Kaoga is a climate scientist and faculty member at the University of Nairobi’s Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation. With over 20 years in training, research, and outreach, his work centers on social-ecological resilience and socio-cultural impacts of climate change. He serves on key national technical working groups and the Kenya Green Skills Development Alliance. A certified lead EIA expert, he integrates science, policy, and community engagement to address climate challenges.

Mr. David Omwoyo Omwoyo

CEO Media Council of Kenya

David Omwoyo is CEO of the Media Council of Kenya, the national regulator of Kenya’s media sector. With 15+ years’ experience in journalism, media training, and management, he has led initiatives in public, private, religious, and NGO sectors. Formerly MD of Waumini Communications and Communications Director at the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, he expanded community radio for peace and development. He chairs the World Association of Press Councils and East African Press Councils.

The media is pivotal in shaping public understanding and action on climate change. Through reporting research outcomes, policy debates, and real-world impacts, it informs diverse audiences. Yet, misinformation, politicization, and sensationalism often distort perception and hinder engagement. Effective climate communication demands accuracy, clarity, and storytelling that connects with people’s values and daily lives, while actively countering disinformation. 

As trusted messengers, journalists bridge science and society, fostering informed dialogue and collective action. This discussion will examine contemporary media’s role in climate change reporting, ethical considerations, and the challenges of debunking myths while upholding scientific integrity. ​

Holding multiple degrees and fellowships, Joe researches news innovation, science journalism, and climate communication, and has authored journal articles and book chapters in the field.

Bernard Mwinzi

Bernard Mwinzi is a seasoned journalist with nearly 20 years’ experience across East African newsrooms. Former Managing Editor at Nation Media Group, he led editorial teams at Sunday Nation and Daily Nation. He pioneered the Nation Health and Science desk, spotlighting evidence-based climate and health reporting. A skilled trainer, he’s worked with DW Akademie and the African Academy of Sciences. Pamela Asigi

Managing Editor, Citizen TV

Pamela Asigi, Managing Editor at Citizen TV, is an award-winning broadcast journalist with 24 years of experience. She’s led top newsrooms and shaped Kenya’s news landscape through strategic leadership and climate-focused reporting since 2008. Pamela has covered major global summits including COP14–21 and Rio+20, and holds degrees in Armed Conflict and Peace Studies from UoN. A CNN Fellow and MIT-trained science journalist, she’s also judged ACCER Awards and continues driving impactful storytelling nationwide.

 Synopsis

Where does research data go, and how can complex scientific outcomes be shared with non-academic audiences? Research dissemination connects findings with broader audiences, enabling uptake beyond academia. While climate change research offers vital, quantifiable insights, credibility and reliability in data collection and communication are essential. 

Scientists must translate technical findings into accessible, relatable narratives. However, digital media poses both opportunities and challenges for ethical, effective science communication. This panel explores models for bridging the gap, helping researchers convey climate change science to diverse audiences, fostering understanding, informed dialogue, and meaningful action across society.

Dr. Aswani holds a Ph.D. in Corporate and Government Communication from Daystar University, plus MAs in Ethics and Corporate Communication. A senior lecturer and Director of the Main Campus at Daystar University, he specializes in political, government, and corporate communication, African philosophy, and qualitative research. Formerly head of the Strategic and Organizational Communication Department, he has published extensively in corporate and government communication, ethics, and philosophy, shaping thought leadership in communication studies across Africa.

Prof. Nancy Booker

Associate Professor and Dean, Graduate School of Media and Communications

Prof. Booker, Associate Professor and Dean at the Graduate School of Media and Communications, has over 20 years’ experience as an academic, researcher, media leader, and practitioner. Specializing in broadcast journalism, multimedia storytelling, and health communication, she has published widely and trained in leadership at Harvard. Formerly head of Journalism at Multimedia University of Kenya, she has taught across Africa, worked with KBC and NTV, served on the Media Complaints Commission, and sits on Nation Media Group’s board

Dr. John Recha

Climate Change Scientist, Developer of Climate Change Reporting Module

Dr. Recha provides technical leadership in developing and mainstreaming climate-smart agriculture (CSA) across crops, livestock, aquaculture, agroforestry, irrigation, and land management. He advises regional and national policies to enhance climate resilience for food and nutrition security. Holding a PhD in Soil and Crop Sciences with specializations in International Agriculture, Rural Development, and Soil and Water Engineering from Cornell University, his research and postdoctoral work advance innovative CSA strategies to address global warming’s impacts on farming systems.


Julius Maina

Regional Editor, The Conversation East Africa

Julius been the regional editor (East African) at The Conversation since 2016. Before that he served as managing editor of several Kenyan national daily and weekly newspaper titles under the Nation Media Group and The Standard Group in Nairobi, among them the Saturday Nation. He was the founding editor of Drum East Africa magazine and has also worked as a senior editor in Tanzania.

Fiona Imbali

Strategic Communications and International Development Consultant

Fiona Mbali is a communications specialist with 18+ years’ experience in strategic communications, multimedia journalism, digital verification, advocacy, and climate change communication. She has worked with organizations including AU-IBAR, ACTS, OAIC, and Christian Aid UK, enhancing visibility and driving impactful media engagement. Currently a PhD candidate at the University of Leicester, she hosts the Development Perspectives Africa podcast, exploring challenges and opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa’s development. Public Health Specialist – Amref Health Africa

Sarah Kosgei is a public health specialist with 12+ years’ experience designing and implementing multi-country programs to strengthen health systems across sub-Saharan Africa. Holding advanced degrees in Public Health and an Executive MBA in Global Health, she is Programme Manager at Amref Health Africa, leading initiatives in Global Health Security and Climate Change and Health. Her work protects communities from outbreaks and pandemics while addressing climate-related health impacts, driving strategic responses to urgent global health challenges.

This panel explores how Gen Z and Millennials are transforming the global climate movement through digital advocacy, creative expression, grassroots mobilization, and sustainable entrepreneurship. With strong values and future-focused urgency, they drive awareness, demand accountability, and push systemic change. Discussions will examine motivations, strategies, and the impact of youth-led climate action, alongside challenges such as eco-anxiety, political marginalization, and resource constraints. 

Panelists will also reflect on intergenerational collaboration, inclusive leadership, and digital innovation as tools to amplify youth voices and accelerate climate solutions, inspiring a just, resilient, and future-oriented movement powered by the vision and energy of young leaders. ​

She empowers women and youth with climate-resilient livelihoods, conservation initiatives, and advocacy against FGM and early marriage. Her flagship Tabianchi Program blends agroforestry, cultural arts, and digital platforms for community-led climate action. Honored as Female Environmentalist of the Year (2024/2025), she bridges indigenous wisdom with modern innovation, amplifying frontline voices on global stages like TED Countdown and FAO.


Charles Aredha

BA Applied Science in Computer Science – Daystar University

Charles Aredha is an environmentalist and tech enthusiast committed to sustainable solutions and advocacy. Chairperson of the Daystar Environmental Club, he also hosts the Nature Unfiltered show on Shine FM 99.9. Holding a certification in solar energy, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Science at Daystar University. A skilled frontend developer, Charles integrates sustainability, sustainable tourism, and technology to create impactful solutions that promote environmental stewardship and community awareness.


Magdalene Mwita

Communication student at the Technical University of Kenya

Magdaline Mwita, a communication student at the Technical University of Kenya, is passionate about climate advocacy, youth engagement, and storytelling for impact. As Communication Lead for the Act4Food Kenya Chapter, she leverages skills in digital communication, public speaking, and social media management to promote gender equity, education, and environmental sustainability. Through mentorship and community programs, she amplifies youth voices on justice and sustainable development, with a strong interest in initiatives advancing youth participation in climate action.


Isaac Wafula

A purpose-driven environmental advocate with a background in technology, Isaac holds a Diploma in Business Information Technology and is pursuing a BBIT at Strathmore University. His passion began at Nairobi School, where he led tree planting campaigns as Environmental Club Chairman. Now active in Strathmore’s Sustainability Club and the Bro Who Cleans Initiative, he contributes to national and community environmental efforts. Fredrick Angaga Onyango

Environmental Advocate | Community Leader

BA- Mass Communication and Journalism -Presbyterian University of East Africa

Fredrick, founder of Green Sphere Gardens (formerly Green Kenya Organization), leads climate action, food sustainability, and community empowerment initiatives, including planting fruit trees in schools and promoting sustainable agriculture. He is establishing the Afri-International Organization to connect African climate solutions globally. A journalist-in-training, he blends media with advocacy, developing research on environmental journalism’s impact on farmers. Formerly at Radio PUEA, he produced programs highlighting climate change, youth empowerment, and sustainability, inspiring community-driven environmental stewardship.
